Direct answer
Watford Borough Council collects household waste through four kerbside bins, delivered by contractor Veolia: a brown food waste bin (weekly), a blue-lidded recycling bin (fortnightly for houses and flat blocks of five units or fewer), a black general waste bin (fortnightly), and an optional green garden waste bin (fortnightly, on a paid annual subscription). Because collection days vary street by street, the council doesn't publish one single borough-wide bin day - you need to check your own address using the official bin day look-up tool linked from watford.gov.uk/bins. Garden waste currently costs £62.40 a year for the first bin, with reduced rates for residents on qualifying benefits. houseclearance.co is a separate, independent marketplace - we don't run or book these council services, but this guide explains what the council currently publishes so you know where your routine bin collection stands before deciding whether a job needs a different route entirely.

The four kerbside bins and what goes in each
Watford's standard household set-up, as currently published by the council.
Most houses and smaller blocks of flats in Watford are issued with four bins. The brown bin takes food waste and is collected weekly. The blue-lidded bin takes recycling and is collected fortnightly for houses and flat blocks of five units or fewer. The black bin takes general, non-recyclable waste and is also collected fortnightly. The green bin is an optional, chargeable service for garden waste, also collected fortnightly.
The blue-lidded bin accepts aerosol cans, aluminium foil, tins (food, biscuit and chocolate tins), glass bottles and jars of any colour, paper, envelopes and junk mail, cardboard of all kinds (boxes, egg boxes, tubes, sleeves), drink and food cartons, cleaning and detergent bottles, drinks cans, metal lids and tops, magazines and newspaper, plastic bottles, and plastic tubs and pots such as yoghurt pots and margarine tubs. It does not accept cling film, carrier bags, salad or bread bags, sweet wrappers, crisp packets, polystyrene of any kind, or biodegradable plastics - these all go in the black bin instead. The council also asks residents to empty and rinse containers and squash plastic bottles before putting them in the bin, since contamination can affect what's actually recycled.
Flats in blocks of six units or more are on a different arrangement: blue and brown bins are typically collected weekly rather than fortnightly, and black bin frequency can be weekly or fortnightly depending on the block. The council also notes that brown food waste bins are not currently available to some flats. Garden waste collection for larger blocks is a chargeable option that needs sign-off from the block's managing agent rather than an individual resident subscribing directly. If you live in a larger block, it's worth checking your own arrangement rather than assuming the house-and-small-block pattern above applies to you.
Bins need to go out at the property's front boundary either the evening before collection or by 6am on the collection day itself, and should be brought back within the property boundary within 24 hours of being emptied.
Finding your actual collection day
There is no single Watford-wide bin day - it depends on your street.
One thing worth being upfront about: Watford Borough Council does not publish a single collection day that applies across the whole borough. Different streets and areas are on different rounds, and which bin goes out on which week also depends on your specific collection cycle. Rather than guess based on a neighbouring road or an old flyer, the reliable way to check is the council's own bin day look-up tool, reached via watford.gov.uk/bins. Entering your address there gives you a calendar specific to your property, including which bin is due on which date.
The same hub page is also where the council publishes temporary changes - for example, shifted collection days around bank holidays - so it's worth a quick check there before a long weekend rather than assuming your usual day still applies that particular week.
The move to fortnightly recycling
A standing change, not a temporary measure.
Watford moved blue-lidded recycling collections from weekly to fortnightly for houses and flat blocks of five units or fewer, with the change taking effect from 21 October 2024. The council's current published position states this fortnightly frequency as the standing arrangement going forward, not a trial or a time-limited change that's due to revert - so if you're used to an older weekly pattern from before that date, it's worth updating your expectations rather than assuming it was ever reversed.
Food waste in the brown bin continues to be collected weekly regardless of the recycling change, which gives households a weekly outlet for anything that would otherwise sit in the black or blue bin for a full fortnight. Households with four or more permanent residents can apply to the council's contractor, Veolia, for a second 240-litre blue-lidded bin if the fortnightly cycle doesn't give enough capacity - there's a one-off delivery charge of £7.75 for a new or replacement bin, paid by card.
The garden waste subscription service
Optional, chargeable, and running on an annual cycle from September.
Garden waste collection is not included automatically with the standard bin set - it's a separate, paid subscription using a green bin, collected fortnightly year-round (with one collection typically skipped over the Christmas period). The standard price is £62.40 a year for the first bin and £80 a year for each additional bin, up to a maximum of seven bins per property. Residents receiving specified council benefits, including Universal Credit, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction, pay a reduced rate of £40 a year per bin, and schools and charities pay £62.40 a year per bin.
The subscription year runs from 1 September to 31 August. There's no discount for signing up part-way through the year, and no refund once the service has started and you decide to stop - the one exception is a 14-day cooling-off window with a full refund if you cancel before your first collection has taken place. One rule worth understanding properly rather than treating as a passed deadline: applications made after 1 June don't start until the following 1 September. This isn't a one-off cutoff that happened once - it's how the annual scheme works every year, so signing up in the second half of a subscription year effectively buys you the following year's service rather than immediate collections.
Sign-up is handled through a resident's My Watford online account, and bin stickers typically arrive within about two weeks of subscribing. Direct debit subscribers are renewed automatically each year unless they cancel.
Reporting a missed collection
There's a time window, and conditions on what counts as "missed."
If a bin hasn't been emptied on its scheduled day, report it within 24 hours of that collection day, after 5pm, to Veolia - the council's waste contractor - either by email at enquiries.watford@veolia.co.uk or by phone on 0203 567 6900. For the report to be accepted, your bin generally needs to have been put out correctly in the first place: at the property's front boundary, in place by 6am on the collection day, with the lid closed and only the right materials inside for that bin.
If you need a new or replacement bin rather than a missed collection fixed, that's also arranged through Veolia, with a £7.75 delivery charge applied by card over the phone.

When routine collection isn't enough
Bins are built for ongoing household waste, not a one-off clearance job.
The bin system above is designed for the steady, ongoing waste a household produces week to week - food scraps, packaging, general rubbish and garden trimmings. It isn't designed for a full house clearance, a large volume of furniture, or the kind of one-off job that comes with moving, a bereavement, or an inherited property that needs emptying in one go. Trying to fit that kind of volume through fortnightly black and blue bins would take months and still leave bulky items - sofas, wardrobes, white goods - with nowhere to go through kerbside collection at all.
For bulky single items, Watford Borough Council and local recycling centres are often the right first stop, and we cover the centre option separately in our guide to the Watford recycling centre. For a full property clearance - where the job is multiple rooms, several loads, or needs to happen on a fixed date - our guide to rubbish removal and waste collection London explains how a licensed clearance carrier differs from council collection routes, and our guide to responsible disposal covers how reputable carriers sort items for reuse, recycling and disposal once they've been collected from the property.
Frequently asked questions
The questions that come up most often about Watford's bin collection service.
How do I find my actual bin collection day in Watford?
Watford Borough Council does not publish one single bin day for the whole borough - collection days vary street by street. The council's bin day look-up tool, linked from the official watford.gov.uk/bins page, gives you a calendar for your specific address once you enter your postcode. That is the only reliable way to confirm your own collection day, rather than assuming a neighbouring street's schedule applies to you.
Is recycling collected weekly or fortnightly in Watford?
For houses and flats in blocks of five units or fewer, the blue-lidded recycling bin is currently collected fortnightly. This has been the standing arrangement since the council moved away from weekly recycling collections in October 2024, and it remains the current rule rather than a temporary measure. Food waste in the brown bin is still collected weekly. Flats in blocks of six or more units are on a different, more frequent schedule, so check your own address on the council's look-up tool rather than assuming the house-and-small-block pattern applies to a larger block.
How much does the Watford garden waste collection service cost?
The standard subscription is £62.40 a year for the first green bin and £80 a year for each additional bin, up to seven bins per property. Residents receiving specified council benefits pay a reduced rate of £40 a year per bin. The subscription year runs from 1 September to 31 August, there is no part-year discount, and no refund if you stop using the service once collections have started - though a 14-day cooling-off period with a full refund applies if you cancel before your first collection.
What happens if I sign up for garden waste collection after 1 June?
Applications made after 1 June do not start until the following 1 September, when the new subscription year begins. This is a standing feature of how the annual scheme works rather than a one-off deadline that has now passed - it applies every year, so if you sign up in the second half of the subscription year you are paying for the following year's service rather than getting collections immediately.
What do I do if my bin was not collected in Watford?
Report a missed collection within 24 hours of your scheduled collection day, after 5pm, to Veolia (the council's waste contractor) by emailing enquiries.watford@veolia.co.uk or calling 0203 567 6900. Your bin needs to have been put out correctly - at the property boundary, by 6am, with the lid closed and only the right materials inside - for a missed-collection report to be accepted.
Can houseclearance.co collect my Watford council bins for me?
No. Kerbside bin collection, recycling collection and the garden waste subscription are all run directly by Watford Borough Council through its contractor Veolia, and you book or report issues with those services through the council, not through houseclearance.co. houseclearance.co is a separate marketplace that connects you with independent, licensed clearance carriers for jobs that go beyond what a council bin service covers - a full house clearance, a large bulky item, or several rooms of waste that would take many bin cycles to get through.
Got more than a bin's worth of clearing to do?
Post your job for licensed carriers to quote on, rather than waiting out multiple fortnightly bin cycles.
